Here at Asbestos GRP Labs, we use Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM) to identify asbestos in a provided sample and identify the type of Asbestos present.
- What is Polarised Light Microscopy?
Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM) is used to identify asbestos in bulk samples of building materials. It is used for the identification and classification of asbestos within asbestos containing materials (ACMs) such as thermal insulation, spray coatings, cement, insulating board, floor tile and bitumen adhesives.
- How is it used?
Samples are placed under a stereo microscope within a HEPA filtered fume cabinet and the analyst extracts fibres from the material after an initial visual check to determine the suspected asbestos fibre type. These extracted fibres are placed into an appropriate refractive index (RI) liquid on a microscope slide, covered with a cover slip and taken to the Polarised Light Microscope, where the optical properties of the fibres are analysed. Depending on these findings, the analyst will be able to determine whether the fibres present within the material are asbestos and which type of asbestos is present.
Various turnaround times for analysing bulk materials are available from same-day to 5-days from the time we receive samples at our laboratory. Since our client base covers the UK, we utilise a Royal Mail service that guarantees post delivery before 8:30am. Asbestos GRP Labs is open for business from 9am Monday to Friday, and we also work weekends when the workload requires.
